Today's "Going Global" keynote by Kim Cofino for the K12 Online Conference inspired me to think about my own youth living in Germany and Korea. Digging out some of the Korean brass pieces, I stretched to remember some of the people, places and activities of thirty plus years ago. Though this grill/cooker was designed for bulgogi (a special Korean BBQ dish), it has served only as a decorative piece. Its service today though was so much more as I considered the impact of our global community. Transferring the elements of flexibility, mobility, adaptability, the blending old and new, and 'just in time' to our learning structures will be challenging, but vital for our existence. Naples, FL

Rust and sea air have eroded this bolt - not unusual since it is the railing for the short walkway to the beach. Often bypassed by beach-goers, it offers photographic interest with its texture and depth. Erosion is tricky in that it can happen gradually - and only when the end effects are obvious, do you realize the negative process. Sometimes, though, erosion can be a springboard for change before the damage is too destructive ... timing is definitely a key! 4th Ave N & Gulf of Mexico, Naples, FL

Late afternoon sunlight bathes the upper tier branches of this pine tree. With the season's shortened days, the day's light is even more appreciated. Funny how we tend to value that which is less available - ah, the basis of that economic principle, "supply and demand". Most of us get caught up in the day-to-day routines that demand focus and deny appreciation. Rarely do we have the opportunity to bask in the glory of Mother Nature (much less human nature!). As the 365 project for 2009 begins to close, I can't help but appreciate the daily moment (or so) when the focus is purposely 'out of routine' and suspended in a unique position of design, intensity, and reflection. Traveling through the interior of Florida offers a glimpse into a culture that is not only agricultural, but one that also maintains strong historical ties. This photograph is a detail of a mural on the side of the original 1926 high school gymnasium (now the Okeechobee Freshman Campus). Providing a pictorial view of early settlers on the north shore of Lake Okeechobee, it also depicts wildlife and native plants. Though this beautiful depiction is only a couple of blocks off the main road, it is likely missed by most travelers...their loss! 610 SW 2nd Ave, Okeechobee, FL

Enjoyed a Thanksgiving morning walk...after a couple of rainy days, these water lilies, bathed in their fresh coat of pink, really 'pop' (a bit reminiscent of buttons at the waistline after the ubiquitous turkey dinner)! The reflections extend the color and challenge the mind to separate the real from their watery duplicate. Melbourne, FL

Thanksgiving usually means family get-togethers, football games and overeating...oh, and giving thanks! Taking advantage of a visit with my 87-year-old mother includes unspoken gratitudes with a sorting (and purging) of photographs from the past. Interestingly, the toughest ones to toss were a stack of Poloroid photos (with hand written descriptions on the back) from Vietnam sent from my now deceased dad who was stationed there during the war in 1968. Many showed the elements of war with ships and helicopters, bunkers and guns...but most reflect the humanity and culture with a special emphasis on the children. Though I likely didn't appreciate it at the time, I know he must have had great conflict within to not only perform his duties, but to respect human life.

Though life is what we make of it, acknowledging the limitations and stretching the boundaries can be assets in the quality and relationship with our world. Taking time to do something special for someone everyday is a valued tenet passed down from my parents...and for that, I am thankful. Melbourne, FL

“Hold a true friend with both hands”
- African Proverb

The time for giving thanks nears...and the realization that virtual connections blossom into strong friendships negates the fear that the internet would ruin the intimacy and social nature of human beings (check out Stefana Broadbent's TED video on the subject!). The number and depth of those relationships is certainly different than 'pre-web' but the value is worth 'both hands'! Thanks to all in my network of friends and acquaintances for the special element that you add to my life. Lorenzo Walker campus, Naples, FL

Although this spotlight may be slightly askew, it does create an interesting pattern of light and dark with shadows of the oft intertwining branches. Like the tree's appendages, some people bask in the spotlight, energized by the attention...while others eschew it, preferring the comfort of being 'unseen'. Despite the preferences, our students are best suited to learn and practice both styles. The shy student may tremble with anxiety, but expectations of speaking and presenting early in school will be much easier with an incorporated safety net in a classroom environment. On the other hand, the student who enjoys the attention would benefit from staying in the shadows and practicing good 'audience' skills on occasion. Both have a place and both are desirable - but like most things in life, there's a need for good judgment and applicability! Naples, FL

The berries of this Christmas palm are way ahead of the date of their namesake, not unlike much of the commercialization of the holiday - both seem to have a mind of their own and certainly don't feel the need to hold to the Christian calendar! ;) The growth and progress of this palm tree could not wait for Christmas season to be captured (and who said we couldn't enjoy the holiday celebration in tropical temperatures - sans snow?!) and so it is a daily photo about a month early! 8th Ave S & Gulf of Mexico, Naples, FL

Night falls quickly this time of year and the sliver of a moon keeps the early evening dark. Getting the GPS handhelds ready for a collaborative geocaching project with the ninth grade Geography classes. This is the first year we'll take full advantage since the majority of the campus construction project is completed. Hoping we can combine the scavenger hunt with creation of a kmz tour in Google Earth. Understanding your location in the world with the help of the GPS leads to a variety of content areas (math, science, problem solving, language arts, and geography, of course). The navigational tool can also spark creativity and inventiveness - how could a GPS be used? (i.e., designing a car that could drive itself?). Lorenzo Walker campus, Naples, FL

Waiting at a red light and my camera caught this amazing shot - it was kind of a surreal experience and I almost missed the chance to cross the intersection! More and more I'm totally convinced of the need to have a camera accompany me all the time! Who would have thought I could accidentally capture such a cool example of refracted light! It's been said that many inventions occurred by accident, which is interesting considering the linear steps of the scientific method...but there must be something to all of that chaos and spontaneity! ;) Estey Ave & Airport Rd, Naples, FL

As the humidity of a long Florida summer wanes, the seasonal residents begin to arrive en masse, as evidenced by the filled slots of one of many (once empty) bicycle racks at a condominium parking lot. As the residents are usually retirees, I was fascinated to note the new and modern styles of bicycles (though not racing types!) - only one of about twenty-five total had a basket in the front! :) Bicycles are such a good form of exercise, as well as a great alternative for transportation and exploration - it is good to see folks appreciating their value! With much attention given to the 'pretty' and graceful shore/water birds living along our coast, the anhinga often gets ignored. They are often elusive photographic models unless they are drying their wings, which they need to do fairly often as they do not possess the natural oils to waterproof their feathers. This one found a protected, but sunny, site under the boardwalk to air out those feathers while still keeping a watchful eye on the potential meal! Beauty is really more than skin deep!

This is the first time I've remembered to take a walk through this new park, Freedom Park - it will also be the home of the and is a 'cover' for a stormwater management site. What's for dinner tonight? It is fun to see what you can do with the ingredients at hand. Some days are better than others, but this one was well balanced and tasty with added seasonings and few other basic ingredients. I'm sure our Culinary students would've developed a more inventive recipe, but I wonder how often the idea of designing/creating/producing something with 'the ingredients at hand' could be transferred to other classes, like English and social studies, science and even math...it is, after all, a mimic of 'real life.' A couple of Monarchs were finding plenty of nectar in a mass of yellow flowers today. Their bright orange splendor was in hiding as their wings folded up during rest, but one can get a peak of it amongst the stained-glass pattern of the underwings. Monarchs are known for their traveling tendencies, predictably migrating north and south. Like the monarchs, we have become more transient over the years. Since school was in session, we missed the parade, the tank display, and the ceremony, but stopped by Cambier Park after work to capture the monument's image. The names of Naples' fallen heroes, starting with WWI, are etched in the surrounding panels...and, unfortunately, the name of another Neapolitan was added today. Although I'm glad we take a day to honor our nation's veterans, I wish we would think about their service on a daily basis. After all, "freedom is never free." Cambier Park, Naples, FL

Some people count on 'luck' for success. But, believing in that external locus of control tends to prevent ownership and responsibility. On the other hand, instilling belief in self-power has a far-reaching influence that is positive and self-perpetuating. The fish that got away - what a clever sand sculpture! Inventiveness and creativity fed by the imagination of one's mind and available resources. Though there were master sand sculptors an hour north on Ft. Myers Beach this past weekend, this work of *art* captures the innocence and the storytelling that can only come from amateurs. Solitude - the state of being alone is often underrated with all of the attention on social networking these days. There was a feeding frenzy this morning - the birds were everywhere...including the ones that flew south for the winter! It was mesmerizing to watch - and try to photograph (if interested, watch the video and see other photos)! The crazed chaos sort of reminds me of the rush to get the newest gadget, web 2.0 tool or other social media platform - yes, I'm guilty, as well on occasion. :) Sometimes the resources are limited and survival depends on it, but many times, the frenzy results from a perceived need to be part of the 'crowd'. 1st Ave N & Gulf of Mexico, Naples, FL

Though I was on my way to photograph something else, this butterfly/moth (I'm thinking moth, but I couldn't find a matching identifying photograph and it is pretty colorful for a moth) flitted in front of me and took me on a distracted and welcomed photo shoot. It is challenging to capture these insects while they fold their symmetrical wings back and forth...and before they move off to the next landing spot. The wing's patterns offer so many survival strategies - camouflaging in brown and neutrals to blend into the woody and sandy environment and sporting large 'eyespots' to mimic a larger predator.

Camouflage in the human world is often used for the same purposes. Human nature also tends to accept a manipulation of camouflage, as noted with J. Russell Lynes' quote:
“Camouflage is a game we all like to play, but our secrets are as surely revealed by what we want to seem to be as by what we want to conceal.”

n one word, I can describe this as 'lunch',
but what about:

"An apple a day keeps the doctors away." - proverb (health)
The golden apple - education, excellence
Apple Macs - computers, business
“The apple does not fall far from the tree.” - proverb (science, genetics, psychology, behavior)
Forbidden fruit - religion (Bible, object of desire)
William Tell's arrow split apple - history (legend)
Sir Isaac Newton's apple - science (gravity)
"Apple of my eye" - love, affection (Shakespeare, Bible)
Johnny Appleseed's apple - agriculture (legend, conservation)
"American as apple pie" - culture

WOW - how did my lunch end up with so many diversified representations?

What else does an apple represent to you?

After putting off household maintenance items for too long, I finally took some time to tackle some yesterday. One task, fixing a leaky faucet, required a trip to the home improvement store for supplies and advice. What a coup - I learned more than I needed to know and left with the loan of a tool, the 'magic key'. Indeed, it came in handy as I methodically disassembled the bathroom faucet and successfully fixed the leak (yea me!). And the experience reminded me how much we ignore the amount and quality of problem-solving, thinking and creativity that are required for so many of the 'hands-on' careers and avocations. We have misplaced value, not giving credit for the tactile knowledge and the spatial skills that equal, if not surpass, the intellectual philosophizing! Naples, FL

The birds were in mass this morning, flying back and forth, while eyes were keenly focused below for their food source. They gathered in crowds like a community picnic, of sorts, and when one dove for a morsel the others circled back around to see if there were other silvery motions in the water. Their gliding, diving, and soaring was a bit dizzying and though I took many shots, most were out of focus. This one in the forefront was an attempt at 'stop-action,' unfortunately, the good early morning sunlight was on the blurred others. 5th Ave N & Gulf of Mexico, Naples, FL
