Trash art from the 9th grade geography class in their globalization unit with a focus on Earth Day. Liked this one for the title, "Robot Bride"! I was working in a shaded and lights-off room without a tripod, so most shots were poor. Other incredible pieces of trash art were just too blurred to post, but there are a couple of others in the photostream. Lorenzo Walker campus, Naples, FL

The entryway signage for our Collier Campus branch of Edison State College - It was the last night of spring semester and exams are scheduled next week. Since my exam is online, i don't need to physically be there, So this is my last view until fall semester! Just hope the flowers don't overtake the view, ;) Edison State College, Naples, FL

Contrast - the light and the dark, the black and the white. But we know that in reality there is much more 'gray area' than the absolutes of black and white - so how does that fit in? Naples, FL

There is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself.

Our exotic and very tropical Plumerias (also known as Frangipanis) are just starting to burst out in pinks, yellows, and whites. Their gentle scent cannot compete with the also blooming gardenias, but their delicate and simplistic design easily makes up for it...and the flowers offer a beautiful surprise to the ugly wooden branch from which they cluster. The plant is a beautiful transformation - ugly duckling style!

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.
~ Henry David Thoreau

Just as the sun came up over the horizon, burning brightly, this group left the dock for a day of fishing. Poles racked up, one can only hope that they enjoyed their day on the water....fish or no. Naples City Dock, 12th St S & Naples Bay, Naples, FL

The temperatures are perfect, but the very dry weather is preventing most of the natural (i.e., no irrigation) flowering seen this time of year. Still, these beach dune flowers are trying desperately to persevere. The rainy season doesn't typically start until June, but hopefully, we'll get a few showers here and there. Who says 13 is an unlucky number? Well, according to Wikipedia, there are plenty of religious, cultural and historical reasons to avoid the number thirteen. And, after all, you don't see any tall buildings with a 13th floor, though they have thirteen floors. But it is really just a number between 12 and 14 and more importantly, it is the 'lagniappe' in the 13th bagel in the 'baker's dozen' - can't be all that bad, can it? Naples, FL

The new Health Science/Science building on the Edison State College - Collier campus is a beautiful building with many simple and interlocking lines and features. It is lovely during the daytime, but at light, it really sparkles and shines, flooding the sky with bright light and neat silhouettes. Definitely, a beacon for learning! An hour at the dentist's office - just a cleaning! :) Very precise tools and delicate maneuvering contribute to a successful result. Dentist visits can be quite unappealing, but over the years the tools have more finesse and, at least for my dentist, the people are very understanding and caring....making the trip less stressful.

For some students, the daily visit to school can be just as much a 'turn-off' and though, I'm not a proponent of creating environments without the appropriate seriousness, we could take an important message from those 'negative' connotations of sitting in the dentist chair! A couple of my favorite Nook readers showing off their cute smiles! I ran out of Nooks and they had to select between them, though the other has the first one back 'on reserve'. And, guess what they are reading?? The Hunger Games trilogy, of course! :) Lorenzo Walker campus, Naples, FL

Waterfront property is always popular, despite the exorbitant price. The trade-off, though, is a lack of privacy. For me, it would need to be a special type of waterfront property to avoid as much of the 'eye-balling' as possible, but I suppose I could get use to something like the one pictured here - boat included, of course! The wild iris are just starting to bloom and they certainly are a colorful addition to the greens and browns of the swamp. This one remains pristine and untouched, except for the drops of dew, but they are major feeding attractions for the overpopulated (and hungry!) grasshoppers. Unfortunately, this one may not last long...but, at least the photograph will. Freedom Park, Naples, FL

The golden necklace laced with pearls is one of the beach's natural treasures...and yet generally overlooked by passerbys as they run along the sandy shore or shoot photographs of the birds, as they stoop for that special shell or merely use the time to (over)tan themselves amidst the lapping waves. But this seaweed specimen is worth a second look in the early morning sunlight...its value rare when considering the currency. 1st Ave N & Gulf of Mexico, Naples, FL

The bee party at the pink water lily, third one on the left from the papyrus plants in the Water Garden (where else?). Obviously, I wasn't invited, but 'crashed' the gathering with my camera.

Being off this week and devoid of most all things school-related, I forgot that it was April (yes, I knew it on one level, but...) and thus, Poetry month. I'm hoping to find a matching poem/image each day (though not necessarily my daily image capture), but because I'm late (ahem) to the party, I've taken the liberty to use two others from today's shoots to make up for #1 and #2. Introduction to Poetry
by Billy Collins

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem's room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the author's name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

I love Billy Collins and tweeted this out a few weeks ago - poems and animations (Watch it!)

A colorful bird of paradise brightens up a wait at the stoplight. I'm guessing most drivers don't even notice these beauties in the medium while they stress over meeting their deadlines despite the traffic. Ah, the wonders and gift provided by creating a daily photo commitment! :) Ok, so the other more mundane things in life (i.e., cleaning house, mowing the lawn, etc) go on the back burner, but I'll make that trade-off! :) Davis Blvd & US 41 E, Naples, FL

This one is just hanging on and not as attractive as the dragonflies traditionally seen around here, but its wings sparkled in the sunlight and it lost its camouflage for the lens capture. The magic of early morning light always brings out the best in Mother Nature, making even the ordinary a bit more extraordinary. What potential! :) Freedom Park, Naples, FL
