Our winters are typically pretty dry, so the competition for food in the swamp can be rough. This little blue heron has a keen eye for any possible signs of life ... and ready to strike!

Procrastination in the natural world would likely bring about extinction. In the human world, procrastination is quite prevalent and one wonders how much impact it might have on our survivability. Delaying work on a project, I often find my time counterproductive and distracting...but there are times when the delay tactic involves quiet time for thought, innovation, and reflection. Perhaps I rationalize here...hmmm - either way, I've procrastinated long enough and must move on to that project! :) Freedom Park, Naples, FL

  1. Sometimes procrastination causes me to work well under pressure! Regardless, love the shades on this guy! Great shot!

  2. I agree with Kristy...I've done some good work under pressure!
Great colours and detail in the heron!

  3. I also tend to work best under the pressure of the last minute. It's quite stressful, though. You've captured the heron's 'keen eye' really well. But how do you manage to walk on a swamp?

  4. Well, procrastination is truly being put to the test for this latest project! ;) Agree that it does allow for focused work, but I truly don't enjoy the accompanying stress!

Sinikka - we humans are required to be on the boardwalk in this swampy preserve - I would loved to get a ground perspective, but not on this one! Clyde Butcher (one of my favorite photographers) does swamp walks in the Everglades - 'just an old walking stick to help you walk along' would be his likely response. To take a closer look see this video.

  5. What a beauty. He really stands out from the background. I figure procrastination is okay sometimes, especially if it's what I call constructive procrastination.

  6. Thank you for the video link Marie. What an amazingly beautiful ecosystem the swamp is. I would have a hard time stepping into the mucky ground, I think!
One of Finland's crazy sports is 'swamp soccer' although what they call 'swamp' here is more like just very thick, soft, muddy soil.

  7. Great capture. As to procrastination - think of it as time the brain is working on the problem - then it becomes constructive :-)
