Wonder what this is....it was washed ashore by the cubic yards. The individual white pencil-like objects resemble the spines of sea urchins, but I can't imagine the shedding of spines in such abundance...Guess I'll need to do some research! 5th Ave N & Gulf of Mexico, Naples, FL

  1. Wow - very interesting. So those are about the size of pencils? I thought it looked like rice and vermicelli at first but it's quite a bit bigger huh? I hope you post here if you find out what it is...

  2. You have me puzzled too - I didn't realize the thickness and first thought it was packing paper - now I am curious. I'll be back.

  3. My own research led nowhere, so I emailed the City of Naples, Natural Resource Manager, Dr. Mike Bauer - and he kindly responded: "It’s sun-bleached segments of manatee grass (http://www.sms.si.edu/IRLFieldGuide/Syring_filifo.htm) from deep offshore." Who would've thought...But now you know! :)
