Candles' illumination is small, but very complimentary to the celebratory mood. Exuding warmth and light, the candle is both functional and attractive. The history of candle making goes back BC with very little transformation through the years - a simple, yet effective invention that still provides a use today, though more ornamental in nature. I took a hiatus from commenting - glad to back. It's hard in our time of electricity to imagine a home just lit by candles. What was once essential is now, as you say, ornamental. But it provides a warm light in ways that electric light doesn't.
