MAR062009

MAR062009, originally uploaded by colemama.

This rusty old compressor continues to chug along, but it is scheduled to be replaced when the construction project ends in another six months or so. Although its appearance is less than desirable, all the parts are working and its defined purpose is accomplished every day...which, of course, got me to thinking about how that correlates with education and learning.

The focus on high stakes testing has diluted the purpose of education - the pressure and narrow mindedness is in direct conflict with reflection, discourse, and inquiry...vital components for learning. Thus, I wonder if the 'essential question', i.e., the purpose/goal of education and learning is misunderstood? How can we work towards a goal if there is no guiding light ...or if the guiding light is misdirected? And, without that foundation, can all of the integral parts be working and/or working to capacity? No matter your view, these questions are worth pondering as all of our futures depend on our investment in the education of our present! Lorenzo Walker campus, Naples, FL
