This immature Bismarck Silver Palm (my absolute favorite palm variety!) tree trunk is covered with a convergence of old dead leaf/frond bases. The silvery blue-green fronds almost shimmer and the braided pattern allows for both a solid foundation and directional variety. Convergence is evident in our digital lifestyles with the mobility and ubiquity of 'smart phones' that provide communication, entertainment, information, geographical location, and organization. Once again, I find educational institutions generally ignoring the present state by compartmentalizing most opportunities (i.e., content, grades, classrooms, instruction) rather than integrating and converging. And, once again, I ask myself...are we really preparing our young people for their futures? Old Trail Dr & Parkshore Dr, Naples, FL

Just like these blossoms....feeling a bit wilted as the weather continues to be summer-like with temperatures in the 90s F and humidity just as high. However, the early snowy blizzard in the Rockies (my old 'stomping grounds') isn't very appealing either (except the storybook pictures of the accumulated white precipitation from a warm environment!). What happened to balance? Is the planet out of sync? Or is our 'norm' changing? Has the fulcrum shifted or ...? Interesting to ponder as it impacts our world. Naples, FL

Amidst a diverse assortment of culinary delights, this new Czech bistro and bakery seemed an unlikely survivor. Though I've never seen a vehicle parked in front of the restaurant, this review dubs it successful. It is definitely risky to open a new business during these economic times, especially one so niche-oriented, but it just goes to show 'nothing ventured, nothing gained'. So it is with most ventures - you've got to give it a try! :) US 41 E & 3rd Ave S, Naples, FL

Shadows and sepia seemed to partner well for today's image (also tried black/white on the original color). Shadows can sometimes be annoying in both photography (ever find your own shadow blocking the desired focal point?) and social situations (remember the younger sibling who would always tag along?)...those same shadows can also be shaped and viewed in 'a different light'! Pumpkins, pumpkins, everywhere! These orange spheres are the basis for the Halloween Jack-o'-lanterns, of course, and there's even an 'app' for that! But they are also great sources of delicious nutrition - check out these recipes if you need some inspiration! My favorite, though, are toasted pumpkin seeds ...something about the spicy, salty dusting and the organic nature of the snack is irresistible this time of year. Oakes Farm Market, Naples, FL

Scary and spooky, this ghoulish guy 'greets' the diners at a local restaurant. The mummy and vulture were also there, though their impact was much more minimized behind the glass booth ... even the skeletons escaped the grave to provide support. I can't imagine what it looks like inside, but so far, I've not heard of anyone not exiting without being intact and sated! St. George and the Dragon, Four Corners, Naples, FL

Living close to and regularly visiting the beach may lead to a 'take-it-for-granted' attitude, but scenes such as this remain awe-inspiring! Complacency can be a dangerous attribute as it stunts growth, prevents questioning and sets up a false sense of security. The gliding flight of these pelicans is part of their daily routine and yet, the act alone is so foreign to the human observer. Nevertheless, it is one of many things we take for granted in the course of our day. Though it is easy to say, "stop and smell the roses"...it is much more difficult to put that advise into action. Thankfully, beach-time is a chance to focus on those everyday events! 2nd Ave N & Gulf of Mexico

Taking photos around town this afternoon and noticed this oak tree decorated with pink ribbons to acknowledge breast cancer awareness month. Picnik is also honoring the cause with a couple of effects (one of which I used here). Considering that breast cancer is the second most common in the US (with skin cancer being #1), it is vital that awareness and education get attention and publicity. Like many, I know friends and family who have battled the invasion and like so many of our contemporary diseases, early detection can be the key to a successful experience. Here's a small remembrance to those who have suffered and a reminder to those who are susceptible - please take preventative measures! 3rd St S & 12th Ave, Naples, FL

Bright sunny days ... and still quite warm (90 degrees high today) for October! Increasing the contrast in this photo helps to bring out the frond fraying as well as the sun 'shine'! Accentuating features can provide a slightly different interpretation to this photo - and going beyond the original shows manipulation and engagement. Visual learners connect with images such as these, but developing and reflecting on their own creations takes it to a deeper level. Some days I really do wish we could throw away the textbooks, break out of the confines of the classroom and really put the 'teacher-facilitators' and the students in a open environment for innovative learning. Despite its interesting and colorful appearance (and possible resemblance to this month's favorite squash), this weedy vine is a major nuisance. The young green ridged pod matures into a bright orange one and develops bright red seeds within which explode into the environment, cycling through the process of life again - unless I manage to curtail it... Seems there's a reason for everything in nature, but I'm still trying to figure this one out! :) Naples, FL

When we cannot bear to be alone, it means we do not properly value the only companion we have from birth to death -- ourselves.
~ Eda LeShan

Early Sunday mornings are such a great time to commune with nature, while the 'hustle and bustle' of our usual activities remain asleep and the sun, itself, begins to stretch its shine over the horizon. The beach was nearly vacant this morning with a brisk breeze and cooler temperatures - no walkers, runners or seashell searchers, no crabs, no pelicans and only an isolated little sandpiper dodging the incoming tide. With a fury and strength of the waters and the shifting of the sand, even the shells were rare. This fingered sponge stood tall and solid, filtering the elements with its porous skeleton. The ebb and flow, the give and take, the pendulum swing all seek equilibrium in nature. 3rd Ave N & Gulf of Mexico

In this chaotic world of ours, the familiarity of lines, patterns and culture offer a stable foundation. Though they say the only thing we can predict is the inevitability of change (at some time or another!), it is human nature to stay within our 'comfort level". Taking a different hue, I was inspired by Alan's 285/365 photo to find a partner for his interestingly-photographed household item. Nowhere near the quality of even his 'desperate' photo, it is still an original creation/interpretation. Emphasis on innovation and own/collaborative work and/or adding to the work of others (with attribution) in a remix creation is an ideal principle to weave within our learning environments. There is such pressure for doing 'excellent' work that some think it is better to 'copy and paste' or mimic another's idea than to suffer a lower evaluative mark on something that reflects their own learning. We really need to change that value....Naples, FL

Power, usually defined as a form of influence and control, is still an accurate characteristic of our electricity system. And like other forms of power, it depends on connectivity and interactivity to other elements. Our own circle of 'influence' mimics the need for relationships and engagement. The multi-layers of these fan palm leaves show a depth and pattern of green 'points'. They also offer a subtle (and imaginary) relief to the record-hot temperatures that have impacted us the last week or so. Think about the 'fans' used in the past when air conditioning and even electricity was not available! They can also be used to weave palm hats and drink coolers and their berries are edible - a versatile plant to have around! :) 7th Ave S & 10th St, Naples, FL

Persuasion may not be so evident in this storefront window of boogie board sales, but the role of the marketing industry is an important one in our society. Just as Christopher Columbus needed to convince Queen Isabella of his adventures a-sea, educators are constantly challenged to "sell" their content to students. I had to chuckle when a first year teacher revealed that it was "easy" to find a lesson plan, but that it was very time consuming and difficult to engage the students as they needed something more interactive, hands-on, and of more variety. Persuasion + motivation can lead to very powerful results! 6th Ave S & 10th St, Naples, FL

After six weeks of experimenting with three different types of contact lenses, I do believe we have a winner! This experience leads to a couple of thoughts - one, the notion of the need for repetitive tries to succeed (and how many times we allow failure to curtail those opportunities for success!) and two, the number of things we take for granted, in this case the sense of sight. Despite knowing the truisms of such thoughts, it is difficult to internalize them - but, need to keep trying! Naples, FL

This multi-storied condominium building appears to be growing out of the mangroves. In fact, it basically is...this is an example of zoning and construction permitting at its worst IMHO. Fortunately, it is fairly rare in this part of southwest Florida (especially compared to the southeast corridor), but I can't even begin to imagine the displaced flora and fauna with the addition of this tower to the landscape. Sometimes we don't learn from our mistakes until they are so blatantly obvious - guess that's the nature of the pendulum swing! State Road 951, Marco Shores, FL

Computer monitors light up the darkened room! Our new buildings are equipped with a form of motion-detector lighting to reduce electricity when the room is not being used. Unfortunately, if you are too still, they also go off...leaving you in the dark if, as in this room, there are no windows. Fortunately, the majority of classrooms occupy an exterior wall and yield ample natural lighting. In attempts to conserve, we often don't consider other ramifications - guess that is part of the focused attempt to do the right thing. Lorenzo Walker campus, Naples, FL

Looking up 15 feet or so, I thought I saw a pineapple growing on the limb of a mahogany tree! A second look revealed the true source of the image - a rather large epiphyte, commonly referred to as an air plant! Sometimes looks can be deceiving! I like to use real life examples such as this one to demonstrate to students why they need to engage their thinking skills with just about everything they encounter - the act of questioning, doubting, researching, using one's brain, and generally interacting with content and/or others can be facilitated in a variety of ways, but is always a vital component! Though this is apple season in the northern latitudes, down in the tropical South, we are ready to harvest the unique and tasty key limes! This year's crop is tangy and juicy - Key Lime Pie, anyone? The flavor is exquisitely tart and makes for a great addition to vodka & tonic (or so I'm told) and just plain water.

Speaking of latitudes, one of the presentations at the recent conference I attended was focused on using GPS in various high school classes - everything from English to art to math to social studies - I'm excited to collaborate with teachers... Naples, FL

As this kayak quietly flows through the Gulf waters it leaves a slight ripple, a trail of sorts...one that impacts (ever so slightly) the fluidity of the sea. The water's elements dictate a temporary path, but still allow for change. Everything effects everything in some form or fashion - so often we don't recognize our own power for impacting change, however fleeting or seemingly insignificant. The intersection of the moon rising and the sun setting is a rare moment - I've seen the opposite on the west coast of FL many a time, but this sight was beyond description...it was also very short-lived. Like so many things in life, we need to attend to them, grab them, and relish them when the opportunities present themselves. Appreciation of our unique and natural beauties (both human and otherwise) is often overlooked - I keep wondering how we can better mentor that in our students....Melbourne, FL
